You’ve probably heard of the Lello Bookstore. Located in the heart of Porto, Portugal, it’s often cited as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. If you’ve seen photos, you understand why – its intricate wooden shelves, the impressive stained-glass ceiling, and the iconic red staircase create a unique atmosphere that draws thousands of curious visitors every year. But between us, you can only truly appreciate its splendor by seeing it in person. The best part? You can experience this wonder after hours, avoiding the daytime crowds that flock to this legendary space. Yes, you read that right! Imagine having the entire bookstore to yourself, free to explore every corner without the rush of tourists. Sounds great, doesn’t it? As the doors close to the public, they open to you, offering a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a place where every detail tells a story.

Founded by two brothers passionate about literature and art, the Lello Bookstore is a true architectural and cultural treasure. Anyone walking along Rua das Carmelitas in downtown Porto can’t help but notice it. The building is remarkable. It’s one of the most iconic examples of the neo-Gothic style in the city. The stone façade is adorned with reliefs, arches, pilasters, and a triple window, from which two colorful allegorical figures representing Art and Science stand out. But if the exterior is fascinating, it’s the bookstore’s interior that holds all its charm. Upon entering, you’re immediately struck by a magnificent central red staircase, a curving structure that winds up to the first floor. Beyond this focal point, numerous ornate bookshelves stretch up to the ceiling.

The upper floor, accessed via the staircase, is also unique and filled with details. The highlight is a large, vibrant stained-glass ceiling (with 55 panels!), where you can read “Decus in Labore,” which means “Dignity in Work,” reflecting the commitment of the founders and everyone who has worked in this bookstore since it opened in 1906. Here’s an interesting tidbit: it’s a tradition that with each restoration of the stained glass, a subtle detail is added to reflect the time of the intervention. In 2018, a “smile” was added, an icon that not only represents modern times but also symbolizes the joy that fills the bookstore. Will you be able to find it during your visit?

Lello Bookstore also serves as a stage for some artistic installations. One notable example is the “O Rosto do Porto” exhibition, the bookstore’s tribute to the city of Porto and its people. Composed of 400 clay busts, it represents both famous and anonymous figures of the city, such as the architect Siza Vieira, author Richard Zimler, and filmmaker João Botelho, as well as vendors from the traditional Bolhão Market.

Now, let’s talk about books since this is a bookstore, right? Lello Bookstore is a true sanctuary for literature lovers. Here you’ll find a wide range of books, including novels, biographies, poetry collections, as well as collector’s editions and international bestsellers. But there’s more! Discover the Gemma Room, a space dedicated to genuine treasures like rare books, manuscripts, first editions, and luxury books, perfect for those who seek books as objectshisto of art, culture, pleasure, and perhaps, as an investment.
