There is a very long and steep street in Porto called Restauração, connecting the river to the city center. It’s like a narrative through the city’s history. (And it’s crossed by an unmissable tram route.) Near the top is an old mansion. The façade to the street is discreet. But at the back it glows a serene blue. As relaxing as the Douro passing in the background. The Maison Bleue is a safe and refined haven – and a small contemporary art museum (we’ll get to that).

It’s a luxury guesthouse with just nine rooms (why more?), including a family suite. It’s certainly one of the few places that manages to be at the heart of Porto’s heritage and culture, close to the best shopping, and at the same time absolutely sheltered from all the frenzy. If we were only talking about the magnificent terrace facing the river, its seduction would be guaranteed.

Greater pleasures? At the Restart, the restaurant led by chef Arnaldo Azevedo. The menu pays homage to the Portuguese gastronomic repertoire with a creative and sophisticated approach – and the river view also keeps us in good company at the table. In fact, the Maison Bleue can organize at your wish a private cruise along the Douro, or a good day in its valley, experiencing a tailored journey through landscapes, wines and traditions.

And so, we come to the guesthouse’s other richness: the art collection. It’s more than just decoration – there’s a curator on permanent duty. Every room has an original work of art. All of a sudden, you’re looking at an etching by Armanda Passos, one of Portugal’s most important artists. What’s more, the space has a gallery, mainly focused on contemporary European artists. Ask for a guided tour. Immerse yourself in the careful selection.

After all, this is Maison Bleue. Which is the title of one of the most famous paintings by the great Marc Chagall…
