An oceanic Eden. Nine islands. Different in size, similar in great qualities. They float in a saltwater solution but have some of their greatest charms in fresh water. We chose one island: São Miguel. There aren’t enough fingers to count the lakes that embellish it. Two are irresistible: Fogo and Furnas. It’s nature offering its own health club.
We set off from the city of Lagoa, a mere 15 minutes from the Azorean capital, Ponta Delgada. And 20 minutes later we’re in Fogo – Fire, in Portuguese. But there are no flames here, even though the lake was a volcano many thousands of years ago. It’s true, however, that its beauty burns your eyes.
You must look at it from the various viewpoints on the Fogo Peak. And then descend into the crater, which became a mirror of water. Enjoy the peace and quiet, and the flora, and take a swim. Some time ago, Fogo was voted the best wild beach in Portugal, and rightly so. Not far away is the also unmissable Caldeira Velha, a waterfall with tepid, steely waters.
An hour down the road, we want Furnas. And we want it badly! This is why: the Azores are a volcanic archipelago that no longer smokes, but still has waters heated by the planet’s entrails. That’s why we go in search of the Terra Nostra Park and the Poça da Dona Beija pools. Both have hot springs in the beautiful village of Furnas.
In the park, the lake where we relax is artificial only in structure. Its beneficial water, never below 77º F, offers total relaxation. Not even the most lavish spa in the most lavish hotel can exceed this experience. It’s surrounded by a historic garden, a stunning botanical museum.
And all this will whet your appetite, right? Then it’s time for another rewarding and unexpected experience: the Furnas stew. It’s a combination of noble meats and vegetables, cooked for many hours in pots buried in the ground near the lake, next to small natural hot vents. Once again, the warmth of the land offers pleasures.
Some say that the Azores are a myth. Let’s keep saying it is and leave the truth to ourselves.
