There’s a harp echoing in the salon. Tea is about to be served, in the strictest British style. The morning was spent in the outdoor pool on the 13th floor. After lunch there was an exclusive guided tour of the hotel gardens (yes, they are very much impressive). Tomorrow, one goes Above the Clouds and Beyond, because it’s simply irresistible to take part in this 4×4 jeep tour, breakfast included, to one of the highest peaks on the island. The day after tomorrow, the very unique Relaxation Day at the spa. And the day after that…

Member of The Leading Hotels of the World and Virtuoso networks, and the World’s Leading Luxury Hotel 2024 winner by the World Travel Awards, the Savoy opened in 2019 in the place where a historic hotel once stood. The Palace is a palace, yes. But with very modern, sustainable architecture. It breathes earthly nature – it has 250,000 square feet of gardens – and maritime nature: the Atlantic is at its feet.

The authenticity can be felt in the magnificent interior design. Everything is closely related to the island. Take the traditional Madeiran embroidery motifs on the handrails of the grand staircase in the lobby. Or the overpass of the main pool (which is, in fact, the largest hotel pool in Portugal). Or look at the wickerwork, also very typical of the region, which decorates the entertainment bar (with great shows every night).

Then, it all extends to the exceptional spa. It’s called the Laurea Spa, and here’s why: the island boasts the Laurel Forest, UNESCO protected. (One of the main reasons why people come to Madeira is to hike in the mountains and explore the woods.) The spa has an immersive pool. That is, printed on its bottom, on the tiles, is a real lagoon in the mountains of the Laurel Forest. It’s something quite mesmerizing.

One should also underline the seductive rooms and suites – you should not miss the amazing Superior Ocean Suite. Many are perfect for a family stay, likewise those infinite experiences mentioned above. Kids will love The Little Chef afternoon, for instance. And the Children’s Playroom. (Think you’ve seen everything in terms of hotel playrooms? You’ll have to review your criteria.)

A modern palace’s palace, so we said. Historical Funchal is just five minutes away – by foot! That is, if you really find a good reason to leave the Savoy…
