Mountains. Stunning viewpoints. Caves. Craters. The sub-tropical Atlantic – all washed down with a fine Madeira wine! What an island! On our way to the depths of the earth or into the valleys, we are dazzled by the roads that crosses the island, between curves and counter-curves and lush green forests. In between, you smell the wet earth, and the pure air refreshes your lungs. And then there’s a human build phenomenon: the “levadas”.
It’s unthinkable to go to Madeira and not walk along the “levadas”, the irrigation channels built by the first Portuguese settlers in the 15th century. For example, the famous 25 Fountains Levada. It takes water from north to south and ends in a lagoon with the same name. It’s near Jardim do Mar, a picturesque seaside village with a sea wall that skirts the ocean. It has hosted world surfing championship events. Ah, but we digress…
The levadas are the best way to visit the heart of Madeira. It’s like stepping into its DNA. But, please note it takes some preparation. This is hiking in demanding sense. Don’t forget footwear suitable for slippery terrain; fresh, comfortable clothing; plenty of water; and a well-charged cell phone battery. And of course: blindly obey your guide!
The sensorial reward is tremendous. At the end, head down to the capital city of Funchal. There will be a restaurant with perfect regional food waiting for you – and a “poncha”, of course! Madeira’s unique cocktail. Cheers!
